Google employees can work on their own projects ONLY if the project is somehow of interest to Google. A good example is GMail which originally was an employee's hobby project and now famously is the state of the art webmail service.

I guess in business you need such guidelines so all that extra motivation turns into profit, not a collection of cool, useless junk (not forgetting some of that completely useless junk is a billion dollar business right now...).

"Google gives their employees freedom to be creative, letting them devote 20 per cent of their working hours to projects of their own choosing."

I am sending in my application to Google today.

Cheers

So my advice to managers and employees is this: Make happiness at work your top priority. It will make work more fun, it will make you happier in life, and it will make you more successful.
